Smith on the writing process

I think to understand an idea you have to wade in, write your way through it, and throw away big hunks until you get it right.... I think of a story not as a part of myself on a page, but as a thing that can be better or worse depending on what I do to it. I really do think of it as a thing to be shaped, made, and perfected. --Lee Smith
