Well, thanks to my dear online friend, Georganna, from Writer's Edge, and her recent post about LibraryThing, I've finally begun to catalog my ever-growing and ever-evolving library. The results are at the top of the right-hand column where you can view the 75 books I've entered so far in my new library database. If you just want to see the section of books on writing that have been cataloged, click here. With 18 bookcases, obviously I have a long way to go before I am finished--as if "finished" is even an operating word in this endeavor.
I love the search ability and the freedom to "tag" the books in any way I like. Not only can I catalog according to normal classifications such as "writing" and "crime novels," but I can be creative and even classify books as potential E-bay offerings and "To Be Reviewed (TBRR) and "To Be Read (TBR)." I can provide links to any and all reviews I've written on any book, too--another plus. Viewers (and myself) can toggle between the "graphical shelf" and the "printed list" to view the collection. Once you're at the printed list, you can click on a book and go directly to Amazon to purchase the book or read more about it. The printed list also provides information I've entered about the book, too, and will have my reviews and commentary available.
Frankly, as I scrambled to evacuate last week the thought had occurred more than once that I really wished I'd followed through and cataloged my books. Had Rita made good on her threat, an online list that could be downloaded into Excel would have been invaluable when it came to meeting the insurance adjuster's requirements. With LibraryThing offering a free catalog of up to 200 books and a mere $10 lifetime membership, this is a deal I can't pass up.
