Although Katrina has spent her energy the wake of destruction still stands. In Houston many of the evacuees have been moved out of the Geroge R. Brown Convention Center and Reliant Center, and the news media has lost its high-pitched reporting fever; however, that doesn't mean that the needs have been met. It does mean that we're in the midst of a great shift as the disaster response changes. Meeting the immediate crisis hifts to responding to long-term challenges.
If you have already reached out to help, now is the time to think about new ways that you can make a difference in the upcoming months. If you haven't, perhaps the moment to reach out is now. If you don't know where to start, begin in your own backyard. Has your community responded to the disaster? Are those organizations in need of a new team to help out the first responders? Do you have any evacuees that have settled in your area? Are they attending your school? Perhaps they just need a friendly face and gentle smile to make their live a little easier. There are many needs to be met and they don't all require money.
What can you do to make someone's life a little easier? What are you doing?
