To help spur you forward, I'm starting a contest: the TeensTakeAction.com contest. Tweens and teens are invited to enter whether you do something individually or as part of a small group of friends, or as part of a class or church project or boy or girl scout project, etc. The prize? $500. The deadline? December 31, 2005.

There's plenty of time to come up with an idea and make it happen. I'll continue to provide you more information, but to get you started here's what you need to do:

1. Look around your neighborhood or your community and see if you can identify a need where you can help or, perhaps, a wrong that you could help correct.

2. See if anything is being done now or has been done in the past.

3.  Draw up a plan.

4.  Carry out the plan.

5.  Take photos.

6.  When you've accomplished your goal or made a significant contribution, write up what you've done and send it to me with accompanying photos.

That's essentially it.

There will be formal entry forms and the inevitable rules and regulations, but this is primarily what's needed and expected to enter the contest.

Where did I get this idea? Well, my new teen novel, DIVIDED LOYALTIES, became the inspiration for this site. My two main characters can't be any more different. Jon's pretty much an environmental caped crusader; while Trisha is strictly business. She's focused on getting her scholarship and working for her dad at the local burger shack. The story is the result of what happens when these two meet.

Much of the research I did in preparing to write the story serves as the inspiration for this blog and the contest. DIVIDED LOYALTIES is available in both e-book and regular bound book form. If you'd like an e-book, try my publisher, Fictionwise or any of the other online bookstores. The print version can be found at my publisher's, but you can also order it through Booksurge.com and Amazon.com (just click through the book on the right side of the blog).
